Impact of Left-Hand Traffic Rules at Road Intersections on the Driving Behavior of Drivers Accustomed to Right-Hand Traffic

    目的 近年来随着中国驾驶员在左行交通规则国家的驾驶需求增多,不同交通规则的差异带来了新的适应挑战,左行交通规则对右行习惯驾驶员驾驶行为影响的研究意义凸显。
    方法 本研究基于SILAB驾驶模拟平台,对比分析了右行习惯驾驶人在左行、右行规则下驾驶车辆速度及行驶轨迹差异。
    结果 在交叉口车辆转向阶段,左行规则会对右行习惯驾驶人驾驶车辆速度及轨迹造成较大影响。相比于右行交通规则,车辆在左行规则下转至近端车道及远端车道时平均车速均较低,车辆行驶轨迹表现出更大的车道偏移标准差。相比于右行交通规则下车辆左转情况,左行规则下车辆右转时车向以更小半径转弯;相比于右行规则下车辆右转情况,左行规则下车辆左转时存在侵占外侧相邻车道的风险。
    结论 研究成果可为右行习惯驾驶员在左行交通规则国家的驾驶培训提供参考,通过针对性的培训,以减少驾驶员在转向时的高风险行为。

     

    Abstract:
    Objective In recent years, with the increasing demand for Chinese drivers to operate vehicles in left-hand traffic countries, the importance of studying the impact of left-hand traffic rules on right-hand accustomed drivers has become more prominent.
    Method This study, based on a driving simulation platform, conducted a comparative analysis of vehicle speed and trajectory differences for right-hand accustomed drivers under left-hand and right-hand traffic conditions.
    Result During the turning phase at intersections, left-hand traffic rules significantly influence the speed and trajectory of right-hand accustomed drivers. Compared to right-hand traffic, vehicles transitioning into near and far lanes under left-hand rules exhibited lower average speeds and greater standard deviations in lane deviation. Additionally, right turns under left-hand traffic tended to be made with a smaller turning radius compared to left turns under right-hand rules, while left turns under left-hand traffic showed a higher risk of encroaching into adjacent outer lanes.
    Conclusion These findings offer valuable insights for training right-hand accustomed drivers in left-hand traffic countries, helping to reduce high-risk behavior during turns through targeted training.
